Prompt advice and gentle treatment at our Milton Keynes practice.

Dental problems do not always give warning. If you have severe toothache, a cracked or broken tooth, swelling, a lost filling or trauma from an accident, our clinicians will assess your situation and provide treatment designed to ease symptoms and protect your oral health. We will advise you on the next available urgent appointment and what to do in the meantime, so you know exactly where you stand.

Please contact an emergency dentist if you experience any of the following:
● Persistent or severe toothache that is not settling with usual pain relief
● Facial or gum swelling, with or without tenderness
● A broken, chipped or knocked-out tooth
● A lost filling, crown or veneer causing sharp edges or sensitivity
● Bleeding from the mouth that does not stop with gentle pressure
● Sudden trauma to the teeth or jaws
Not every concern needs a same-day visit, but a quick conversation with our team helps determine the right level of care. If you are unsure, err on the side of caution and get in touch for advice.

Simple steps may help before you see us:
● Keep the area clean with warm saltwater rinses
● Use your usual pain relief as directed on the packet
● Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
● If a crown has come off, keep it safe and bring it to your appointment
● If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown, gently rinse if dirty and keep it moist in milk or saliva
● Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum
● Stick to softer foods and avoid very hot or cold drinks if the tooth is sensitive
If symptoms worsen or you develop difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek urgent medical help.
Our approach is straightforward and patient-focused.
1) Welcome And Brief History
We start by listening. You will be asked about your symptoms, when they began and any relevant medical or dental history. This helps us understand what matters most to you.
2) Examination And Diagnostics
Your dentist will carry out a careful clinical examination. Digital X-rays may be taken to identify underlying problems such as decay, infection or fractures. For complex trauma or deep infections, our CBCT scanner may be recommended. Silver Oaks Dental has a Cone Beam Computed Tomography scanner that can capture detailed 3D images of the teeth, jawbone and surrounding structures. Where appropriate, this supports a clearer diagnosis and more precise planning.
3) Immediate Treatment
The priority is to relieve discomfort and stabilise the situation. This could involve opening a tooth to reduce pressure from infection, smoothing or repairing broken edges, placing a temporary filling, re-cementing a crown or providing guidance for a knocked-out tooth.
4) Clear Next Steps
Once your immediate concern is addressed, we discuss options for definitive care. You will receive practical advice, home care instructions and recommendations for any follow-up appointments.
Emergency dentistry focuses on stabilisation and comfort. Depending on your needs, treatment during the appointment may include:
● Pain relief measures where suitable
● Draining of an abscess or starting root canal therapy to reduce pressure from infection
● Temporary fillings or dressings to protect exposed dentine and ease sensitivity
● Smoothing sharp edges or placing composite bonding to prevent soft tissue irritation
● Re-cementing a dislodged crown or bridge if clinically appropriate
● Guidance on managing a knocked-out tooth and assessing suitability for reimplantation
● Prescription of antibiotics only where indicated following an assessment
If a broken tooth is likely to need a crown or onlay later, our intraoral scanner may be used at a subsequent visit to create precise digital impressions. This can improve comfort, help you and your dentist visualise the plan and reduce the need for traditional putty impressions where appropriate.
Emergency appointments can support anyone experiencing sudden dental problems that need prompt attention, including:
● Acute toothache caused by decay, cracked teeth or inflamed nerves
● Swelling or abscesses that require assessment and drainage
● Dental injuries from sport, accidents or biting on hard foods
● Complications from previous treatment, such as loose or lost restorations
Suitability for specific treatments varies by case. Your dentist will advise on immediate options and whether further care is recommended once the urgent issue has been stabilised. We will always explain the benefits and limitations in clear, simple terms.
Your safety guides every decision. After your assessment, your dentist will outline findings and explain the options available, including any alternatives. Where helpful, our CBCT scanner can provide a more complete view of root fractures, sinus involvement or the extent of infection. This supports confident planning for procedures such as root canal therapy or extractions where needed.
Some emergencies can be resolved in a single visit. Others are the first step in a wider plan, for example when a root canal, crown or implant assessment may be considered later. Results vary from patient to patient, and further appointments are arranged where needed. Our focus is to move you from urgent relief to long-term reassurance with clear, staged care.
Before you leave, you will be given tailored advice to support healing and reduce the risk of recurrence. This may include:
● How to manage any residual discomfort
● What to eat and drink while the area settles
● Brushing and cleaning tips around a temporary restoration
● Signs that suggest you should contact us again
Attending any recommended review or follow-up appointment is important. It allows us to check that symptoms are improving and to refine a longer-term plan if required.
Dental emergencies can feel unsettling. Our team works at a calm pace, explains each step and checks in with you regularly. Local anaesthesia is used where appropriate to keep you comfortable, and short breaks can be taken during treatment if you need them. If you are particularly anxious, please let us know when you contact us so we can plan your visit with that in mind.

We listen, assess and act to relieve your symptoms, then guide you through the most appropriate next steps.
